The first story is Unaccustomed Earth.
Unaccustomed earth is a first story of this book. It tells about a relationship between a father and daughter,Roma. After a sudden death of Roma's mother, She misses her. She feels her mother's presence around her at every moment in her life since then. When her father visits her home in Seattle , she feels some reservation about her father stay with her forever, but at the same time she shows concern about her fathers loneliness also. Her father starts exploring different places in the world to curb his loneliness without his wife. during one of his visits , he meets Mrs Bagachi , a bengoli widow and they become good friends.He wants to tell about his friendship with Mrs Bagachi to his daughter but is never able make it. And without telling her about his new girlfriend he leaves the house.during his stay at her house he makes her garden beautiful by planting different flower plants and bushes. He also gets mingled up with his grandson Akash. In the end of the story Roma gets a letter written in Bengali by his father to Mrs Bagachi and she reacts in different way but soon understands his father and posts it.
The second story is hell Heaven. A tale of a family friend who comes closer to family and eventually goes away leaving his impact on family which is told by the girl from the family.
Pranab Chakraborty a guy from wealthy family from Calcutta when comes to US he becomes a very close family friend of Shyamal's family.After his arrival the life of Shyamal's wife changes.Pranab's casualness and his free nature brings happiness in her life.They start visiting nearby places,talk often about their mutual interests.One day when Shyamal's wife comes to know about his engagement with Deborah,she feels sad and jealous about Deborah . and says that this relationship will not last for long.Pranab gets married to Deborah and drifts out of Shyamal's family . For breakup of this family relationship Shyaml's wife blames Deborah.Suddenly after few years Deborah calls Shyamal's family for their marriage anniversary.Few years later Deborah and Pranab gets separate by divorce due to Pranabs extramarital affair with one of the Bengali woman everyone know.Deborah calls Shyamal's wife and tells that she always tried to to get Pranab to reconcile with his parents and she also encouraged him to maintain ties with other bengalis but he resisted which surprises Shyamal's wife.Shyamal's wife never tells her feelings for Pranab to anyone except her own daughter.
The third story of this book is " A choice of Accommodations"
This is a story of Amit and Megan who lose their charm of life after few years of marriage due to family commitments and work but regain it after their visit to the Langford Academy, a boarding school of Amit for Pam Borden's wedding.
"Only Goodness" a story of sister and brother relationship.
Sudha always cares for Rahul.From childhood she becomes not only elder sister but a good mentor and caretaker of Rahul.She protects him and try to help him at every stage of life but at last due to his bad habits ,she breaks the strong bond of their relationship forever.
No body's Business is a story of pretty,smart and still single Bengali girl Sangeeta.She lives with housemates Paul and Heather.She never discusses or shares anything about her personal life to them.One day she introduces Farouk,Freddy to Paul.After that he often finds Freddy at their apartment or Sang out with Freddy. One day Paul gets a call from Deirdre saying that she loves Freddy and they have intimate relationship. Paul tries to tell about the relationship between Deirdre and Freddy to Sang but she denies it by saying that Freddy doesn't have any friend.Paul decides to prove himself and calls Deirdre and at the same time tells sang to be there on the another extension of the same phone.When Paul asks Deirdre about her relationship with Freddy,she confesses all about them and in addition she says that Freddy has such kind of relations with other women as wel.He likes to depend upon women for his daily needs so every woman feels that he can't live without her.Broken hearted Sangeeta leaves the country forever.
Second part of this book comprised of a three stories of Hema and Kaushik's family.
Kaushik's family shifts from Bombay to US and temporarily lives with Hema's family.For few days Hema's mother happily do everything for them.During this stay Kaushik's mother always takes rest or goes for shopping which makes Hema's mother angry.But when she comes to know about her last stage of cancer, she feels simpathy for her.Kaushi's family shifts to a very huge and grand house and after some days kaushik's mother dies.Kaushik leaves the house and goes to university for further study.From the childhood he likes photography.During his stay at hostel,one day his father calls him and tells about his second marriage.In the vacations he visits home and meets his stepmother and two step sisters.He always misses his own mother in the house and one day without teling any one leaves home and never ever comes back to home.After few years his father also shifts to a small house near to Bengali community. Kaushik joins the international journalism.He visits many countries,war places.During his stay in Rome he meets Hema through their common friend and a new realaton flourish between them.At last Kaushik asks her to be with him but she tells that she is already engaged with Naveen and leaves for India.Kaushik also visits Phuket,Thialand.
Hema watches the news of Tsunami and massive surge of water in the costal area of Thialand.
